What is Credentialing?
Credentialing is the process in which a health care organization, entity, or hospital assesses a licensed medical professional’s qualifications in order to provide care or services there. This process usually requires review of a professional’s licensure, education, training, experience, work history, insurance, professional references, and other qualifications. The credentialing process is used to protect patients and ensure they are receiving high quality care from providers.
Most credentialing involves the hiring entity checking the applicant’s name against the OIG’s exclusion list and Federal National Practitioner Databank system.
